A star party is a gathering of amateur astronomers for the purpose of observing objects and events in the sky. Local star parties may be one-night affairs, but larger events can last a week or longer and attract hundreds or even thousands of participants.

It is essential that you check the weather prior to heading out to a star party and that you adequately prepare in terms of clothing. During the winter, be sure to include long johns, hat, scarf, parka, gloves, heavy socks, and good shoes for the night.

ETIQUETTE: Don't use white lights. If you come to a star party without a telescope please park some distance away from the observing site to save room for those with heavy equipment to carry. Never touch the equipment without permission. ... Never touch any glass optical surface. Avoid loud and boisterous behavior.
